— HOW WE WORK
Three Ways to Come to Innova Dental
Not every patient comes through the same door. We've structured our appointments to fit your actual situation — not a one-size process.
01New Patients
Comprehensive First Visit
For patients joining Innova Dental as their primary dental practice. A full new patient appointment — examination, digital scans, X-rays, photographs, periodontal charting, hygiene, and treatment planning — all in one extended visit.
By the end of your first appointment, you'll have a complete picture of your oral health and a clear, prioritised plan. Nothing is rushed and nothing is pushed.
02Specific Procedures
Focused Consultation
For patients who already have a dentist and are coming to Innova Dental for a specific treatment — implant placement, bone grafting, oral surgery, or IV sedation. The consultation is focused on your specific need rather than a comprehensive new patient review.
Your existing records are welcomed. Following treatment, a full clinical summary is provided for your primary dentist.
03Same-Day Treatment
Consultation & Treatment in One Visit
For wisdom teeth removal and dental emergencies, consultation and treatment can take place in the same appointment where clinically appropriate. Some screening is carried out prior to booking — the final decision is made on the day following assessment.
If you are in pain or have an urgent dental concern, contact us directly.
— NEW PATIENT VISIT
A First Visit That Actually Tells You Something
A first appointment at Innova Dental is a complete clinical picture — not a brief check-up with a list of things to come back for. You'll leave knowing exactly where your oral health stands and what your options are.
The appointment takes 60 to 90 minutes and covers examination, records, hygiene, and a discussion of findings. It's thorough because it needs to be — and because we'd rather take the time once than work from an incomplete picture.
— WHAT’S INCLUDED
Many patients arrive having had inconsistent dental care, or with a specific concern they want properly assessed. Others simply want to know where things stand after years of routine check-ups elsewhere.
Whatever brings you in, the starting point is the same: a complete, unhurried assessment by a dentist who has the time to look properly and the experience to know what they're looking at.
Treatment, where it's needed, is discussed honestly — prioritised by clinical urgency, explained clearly, and scheduled when you're ready. You'll never feel pressured and you'll never be surprised.
HYGIENE
Professional scale and polish and personalised oral hygiene guidance based on your charting results — all within the same appointment.
TREATMENT PLANNING
Findings discussed and a treatment plan presented at the same visit where appropriate. Complex cases may be followed up with a dedicated planning consultation.
EXAMINATION
Full clinical exam covering teeth, gums, soft tissues, bite, and jaw. Periodontal charting as standard — pocket depths, recession, bleeding, and mobility recorded across all teeth.
DIGITAL RECORDS
Digital intraoral scan, full mouth X-rays and OPG, and a complete set of clinical photographs. Precise, permanent records from the first visit.
— THE APPOINTMENT
What Happens,
Step by Step
Here is what your first appointment at Innova Dental looks like in practice — from arrival through to leaving with a clear understanding of your oral health and next steps.
01 Medical & Dental History
We start by understanding you as a patient — your medical history, current medications, previous dental experiences, and what you're hoping to achieve. This isn't a form-filling exercise; it's a conversation, and it informs everything that follows.
02 Clinical Examination & Periodontal Charting
A thorough examination of your teeth, gums, soft tissues, bite, and jaw joints — with enough time to look properly. Periodontal charting is included as standard, giving us a precise baseline of your gum health that can be tracked over time.
03 X-Rays & Radiographic Imaging
Digital periapical X-rays and a panoramic OPG are taken to assess bone levels, root health, and anything that can't be seen on clinical examination. Digital radiography uses a fraction of the radiation of older film X-rays and produces sharper, more useful images.
04 Digital Intraoral Scan
The digital intraoral scan captures a precise three-dimensional digital model of your teeth and gums — no impression trays, no discomfort. These digital models form part of your permanent record and support planning across all types of treatment, from restorations to implants to cosmetic work.
05 Clinical Photographs
A full set of high-resolution intraoral and extraoral photographs provides a detailed visual record of your dentition. These are used in treatment planning, monitoring, and — with your consent — discussing aesthetic outcomes for cosmetic cases.
06 Hygiene Appointment
A professional scale and polish removes plaque and calculus build-up, and personalised oral hygiene guidance is given based on your charting findings. For patients with more significant periodontal concerns, a treatment plan for further hygiene visits or periodontal therapy will be discussed.
07 Discussion of Findings & Next Steps
Everything found during the appointment is discussed with you clearly and honestly — what's clinically urgent, what can wait, and what's elective. For straightforward cases, a treatment plan is presented before you leave. For more complex needs, a dedicated planning consultation gives us the time to go through options properly.
You leave knowing what we found, what we recommend, and why — never guessing.
— ALREADY HAVE A DENTIST?
We See Patients for Specific Procedures Too.
If you have an existing dentist and are coming to Innova Dental for a procedure they don't offer in-house — implant surgery, bone grafting, wisdom teeth removal, or treatment under IV sedation — your appointment is structured around that specific need.
There is no requirement to transfer your full care to us. Your consultation focuses on the procedure in question, your existing records and X-rays are welcomed, and any specific imaging needed for planning — such as a CBCT scan — can be arranged. After your treatment, a full clinical summary goes back to your primary dentist.
You remain their patient. We provide the treatment they can't.
Same-Day AvailableORAL SURGERY
Wisdom Teeth Removal
Consultation and extraction can take place in the same appointment for most wisdom teeth cases. Simple and surgical extractions, including coronectomy where IAN nerve proximity is a concern. Some pre-screening is carried out before booking — the final clinical decision is made on the day.
Same-Day AvailableURGENT CARE
Dental Emergencies
For patients in pain or with an acute dental problem — abscess, trauma, broken tooth, lost restoration — we aim to assess and treat at the same appointment where clinically possible. Contact us directly if you need to be seen urgently.
IMPLANTOLOGY
Dental Implants & Bone Grafting
A focused implant consultation covers your clinical situation, existing records, and imaging requirements. CBCT scanning is typically required for implant planning and can be arranged. Surgical and restorative phases are both available at Innova Dental.
SEDATION
IV Sedation for Dental Treatment
If your existing dentist does not offer IV sedation, treatment at Innova Dental under RCDSO-authorised moderate IV sedation may be an option. A pre-sedation consultation is required before any sedation appointment to review your medical history and confirm candidacy.
FULL ARCH
All-on-X Full Arch Rehabilitation
A dedicated consultation for patients considering full-arch implant treatment. IV sedation is standard for All-on-X procedures. Assessment covers bone volume, medical history, aesthetic goals, and prosthetic planning.
— BEFORE YOU ARRIVE
What to Bring to Your First Visit
Your current medications list
Include all prescription medications, over-the-counter medicines, supplements, and vitamins. Certain medications affect treatment, anaesthesia, and sedation eligibility — a complete list is clinically important.
Your insurance information
Bring your dental insurance card or policy details if you have coverage. Our team can assist with general insurance queries at the visit.
Previous dental records
Not required — we take our own complete records at the first visit. But if you have recent X-rays from another practice, bringing them can be a useful starting point.

Common
Questions
Questions specific to your situation are best answered directly — get in touch and we'll respond personally.
-
Allow 60 to 90 minutes for a new patient comprehensive visit. The appointment covers history, full examination, periodontal charting, digital scan, X-rays, clinical photographs, a hygiene appointment, and a discussion of findings. Patients with more complex dental histories or concerns may run closer to 90 minutes. Focused consultations for specific procedures are typically shorter — around 30 to 45 minutes depending on the complexity of the case.
-
For new patient comprehensive visits, the first appointment is for examination, records, hygiene, and planning — treatment is scheduled once the full picture has been reviewed and options discussed. For patients coming for wisdom teeth removal or a dental emergency, consultation and treatment can take place in the same appointment where it is clinically appropriate. Some pre-screening is carried out before booking, and the final decision is made following assessment on the day.
-
Yes. Innova Dental sees patients for specific procedures without requiring them to transfer their full dental care. Your consultation is focused on the procedure in question, your existing records are welcomed, and after treatment a full clinical summary is provided for your primary dentist. You remain their patient — we provide the specific treatment they are not able to offer in-house.
-
Intraoral scanning creates a precise three-dimensional digital model of your teeth and gums without impression trays or materials. At Innova Dental, an intraoral scan is taken for all new patients as part of their first visit records. It provides an accurate baseline of your dentition and supports planning across a wide range of treatments — from restorations and implants to cosmetic work. The scan takes a few minutes and is entirely comfortable.
-
No. A significant proportion of patients who come to a new dental practice have had a gap in their care — for all sorts of reasons. The first visit is about understanding where things stand now and planning a sensible way forward. The clinical team's role is to give you an accurate picture of your oral health and the options available — not to comment on how long it has been.
-
For new patient comprehensive visits, IV sedation is not indicated — the appointment involves no treatment, only examination and records. However, if dental anxiety is significant, please mention this when registering your interest. The team will ensure the appointment is as comfortable as possible, and if IV sedation is appropriate for future treatment appointments, this will be assessed and discussed as part of your treatment plan.
